Hi there, my name is Samantha Jones. I’m a senior Magazine Media and News major at Drake University, pursuing my passion to become a stronger writer and communicator. My free time is largely spent running, reading, spending time with close friends, and exploring the outdoors (Okay, fine, I also spend a reasonable amount of time re-watching the Office on Netflix–I’m only human). In my past four years at Drake, I’ve had many amazing opportunities and experienced a lot of adventures–from interning at Food Network Magazine in New York City to developing a deep dependency on coffee (two accomplishments I think we can all agree are completely equal). I’ve written a lot of articles during that time as well, and each one has been a unique and formative experience that taught me so much about the world of journalism.
Growing up, I used to read my mom’s copies of Better Homes & Gardens and Good Housekeeping, and dream of getting to write for a magazine someday. I used to write and illustrate my own stories–which were admittedly very poor–but at the time, were a wonderful outlet for my hyper-creative mind. High school English classes guided my love for writing, and at the suggestion of my English teacher, I applied to Drake’s magazine media program. Flash forward to today: I’m an editorial apprentice for bhg.com, Better Homes & Gardens’ digital magazine, and literally living out my childhood dreams.
When I’m not writing about the latest holiday or crafting trends at BH&G, I’m probably out on a run. Also a Division I cross-country and track athlete, I love the challenge of practicing and competing alongside my teammates. Running is simultaneously the hardest and most rewarding thing I’ve ever done, and while it often leaves me exhausted and very sweaty, I wouldn’t trade that post-run feeling for anything.
In my past few years at Drake, I’ve been published in both on-campus publications and real-world magazines, completed three internships, worked as an editor for Drake Mag (our school’s award-winning magazine), and run a LOT of miles. Through these experiences, I’ve been strengthened in my abilities both as an athlete and a journalist, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
